Director of Undergraduate Studies

Welcome to the website of the Math Director of Undergraduate Studies. We can be reached via e-mail at math.dus@yale.edu .  (When e-mailing math.dus@yale.edu, please do not cc the individual DUSes at the same time - we get a lot of mail and it gets more tricky to manage it if we receive messages in several copies going to different places.)

Math majors are all assigned a personal faculty adviser as well. Advising assignments are sent out twice a year (usually early January and early August), to students who declared one of the math majors since the last assignments were made. You can read more about our advising system in the Math major FAQ linked below.

Announcements:

  • April 7: Math will transition to 4-digit numbers by adding “0” behind every existing number, e.g. Math 225 will become Math 2250. This is already reflected on YCS, and during the summer we will update other places (e.g. departmental website, course pre-requisite lists, etc.)
  • July 11: We have put in place revisions of senior requirement for all of the math majors; these were announced in the Spring to rising seniors. Details can be found in the Math major FAQ. Briefly, the changes are as follows:
    • Math, Intensive math, and Math + Philosophy: The options now include Math 482, a new senior seminar focused on math education.
    • Math + Econ: The options now include theory seminars in Economics, in addition to Math 480 and 481.
    • Math + CPSC / + Physics: The projects still need both a CPSC / Physics and Math components, but there is no longer a required presentation for math.
  • May 31: Take a look at this year’s student prizes, awarded at the math graduation party on May 20.
  • Jan.3, 2024: We have put in place a revision of math major requirements - you can find the information here
