We investigate the rigidity and asymptotic
properties of quantum representations of mapping class
groups. In the genus one case this leads to a problem in
Fourier analysis on the real line. We show that this
problem does not have a solution, and the trivial
representation is isolated in this case. The answer is
different for spherical braid groups, and the question is
open for higher genus surfaces. (Joint work with
