To last year’s Richard H. Brodhead ‘68 Prize, Pat Devlin added the DeVane teaching medal this Spring.
The DeVane medal is Yale’s oldest teaching award. Its description on the Yale teaching prizes site says
“The Yale Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa awards teaching prizes to honor the memory of William Clyde DeVane, Dean of Yale College from 1938 to 1963. The awards recognize character, scholarship, and distinguished undergraduate teaching.”
The following is a note from Matt King ‘22, who gave a speech at the prize ceremony:
“In his five years here, Pat has been dedicated to building a math community and inspiring students to learn math and learn from each other. He doubled enrollment in Math 230/231 by regaling students with a “mathsplosive adventure through math land.” He rallied Yale to participate more and perform better than ever before in the Putnam exam, a national mathematics competition. And during the pandemic, as many social circles were fading, Pat hosted Pat’s Cat’s Power Hour to keep the math community going.”
Congratulations, Pat!
As a very sad ending to the otherwise happy and proud article, we must say good-bye to Pat, who is leaving the department this year for a position at Swarthmore College. Pat, we all wish you the very best in your new job. Yale shall not be the same without you.
