This year’s mathematics Barge contest for first- and second-year students was held on Sunday, April 28. The contest is similar in style to the Putnam exam, and gives students three hours to solve as many problems and puzzles as they can.
The contest was organized by Dr. Andrew Yarmola. In the weeks leading up to the contest, Dr. Yarmola also ran a problem solving seminar where students could learn some fun math and practice problem solving together.
We are very proud of everyone who participated this year, and we hope that it was an enjoyable experience.
The prizes awarded are as follows:
First-year students:
First place: Ruben Carpenter
Second place: Darwin Deng
Third place: Patrick Lu
Second-year students:
First place: June Lee
Second place: William Ning
Third place: Linden Lee
If you are interested in participating in our problem solving seminars, stay tuned for the Putnam seminar that will run weekly during the Fall semester, starting in late September or early October. An announcement will be sent to DUS news when the seminar is about to start. In the meantime, have a wonderful summer!
