Event description:
Severi varieties are projective varieties which parametrize plane algebraic curves with nodal singularities. We study Severi varieties in the view of tropical geometry. This approach provides the following:
\begin{enumerate}
\item Combinatorial descriptions of certain degenerations of Severi varieties;
\item Partial descriptions of tropicalizations of Severi varieties (called tropical Severi varieties);
\item Certain parameter spaces of plane algebraic curves which are almost closed subgroups of algebraic tori;
\item Connection to secondary fans;
\item Understanding of Mikhalkin’s correspondence theorem for nodal curves in terms of tropical intersection theory.
\end{enumerate}
