Event description:

Tropical geometry is one way of studying varieties through their degenerations. I will introduce tropical complexes, which are simplicial complexes together with some additional data, and explain how a tropical complex can be obtained from a semistable degeneration. Many of the properties of graphs that are studied in tropical geometry have higher-dimensional analogues on tropical complexes. I will talk about these analogues as well as some correspondence theorems connecting tropical concepts to classical varieties.
