Event description:

A natural way to study algebraic curves is to examine their linear series. A well-know collection of results from the 80’s concern the behavior of linear series on a general curve of arbitrary genus, and these results have deep implications for the geometry of the moduli space of curves. In this talk, we will discuss how tropical geometry provides us with new tools for studying these sorts of questions, and how it may lead to new insights into moduli problems.
