Event description:

Consider ensembles of charged particles, modeled as continuous matter by the relativistic Maxwell-Vlasov system. This is a beautiful system for which energy is conserved. There are many equilibria, some of which are stable and some unstable. Are there general conditions for their “linear stability”? For their true nonlinear stability? During the last ten years a lot of progress has been made on this question. In this talk I will describe my joint work with Zhiwu Lin. I will focus primarily on the magnetic equilibria, which are spatially dependent and have vanishing electric field.
