In this talk, we will discuss a remarkable quantum algebra, which is generally thought of as a model for the affinization of the q-Heisenberg algebra. We will discuss numerous applications of this algebra to the theory of vertex operators, the geometry of moduli spaces, knot invariants and combinatorics.
