I will prove that every non-compact locally symmetric space $M$ with finite volume contains a compact set $K$ with the property that no periodic maximal flat can be homotoped out of $K$. I will also discuss examples showing that the maximality condition is necessary in all cases. This is join work with Alexandra Pettet.
