Event description:
I will discuss the concept of localization broadly, giving numerous examples from algebra and topology. Next, I’ll review the basics of category theory and motivate the concept of model categories. I will then discuss ways to generalize localization to a categorical setting, culminating with the definition of Bousfield localization and a mention of Bousfield’s Theorem. If there is time at the end I’ll discuss the problem I’m currently working on:
figuring out what properties are preserved by Bousfield localization.
