We address a question of V. Kac, and explain the automorphic properties of certain characters due to V. Kac and M. Wakimoto. We prove that these characters are essentially holomorphic parts of (generalizations of) harmonic weak Maass forms. As a corollary, we obtain an explicit asymptotic expansion. This is joint work with Kathrin Bringmann (University of Cologne).
