An introduction to the SL(2, R) action on the moduli space of abelian differentials

This is an expository talk describing the dynamics of the
SL(2, R) on the moduli space of abelian differentials, in particular, the action of the diagonal subgroup, known as Teichmuller geodesic flow. We will discuss applications to dynamics of billiards in polygons.
