Event description:

While a general, rigorous mathematical model of quantum field theory remains out of reach, we can generally model simple (i.e. non-relativistic) system using fairly basic techniques of functional analysis. In this talk, I shall both give a full description of what comprises such a model, and (more importantly) provide intuition as to why we should expect quantum systems to work in precisely this way. This talk will be reasonably entry-level: I will not be assuming much more than basic knowledge of Hilbert spaces and operators between them.
