Let G be a finitely generated group. The philosophy of geometric group theory is to extract algebraic information about G, from the geometry of a nice metric space on which G acts nicely. In this talk we’ll discuss this program in the context of the mapping class group—a very important group in low dimensional topology and hyperbolic geometry.
