Event description:

In this colloquium-style talk, we will introduce the deformation theory of Galois representations. This theory combines the tools of algebraic geometry and representation theory to produce universal families of Galois representations that have applications in number theory. We will aim to conclude with a discussion of certain special sub-families of Galois representations that are expected to correspond to families of automorphic forms.
