Dynamics on geodesic currents and applications to $Out(F_N)$

 I will talk about the long standing analogy between the mapping class groups and $Out(F_N)$, and describe a Nielsen-Thurston type approach to study subgroups structure of $Out(F_N)$ from a dynamical viewpoint. This is joint work with Matt Clay.
