Event description:
The theory of dual pairs relates the representations of two mutually commuting
subgroups of a symplectic group. Motivation and applications come from
representation theory, invariant theory and number theory. This talk will
present the basics of this formalism and the main theorems involved. Proofs
will be mostly sketched and emphasis will be on the underlying ideas.
