Classical results in class field theory and attempts to extend them to certain non-abelian cases

Class field theory gives a very good description of the abelian extensions of local fields (complete discrete valuation fields with finite residue fields) in terms of the base field. I will describe these classical results and how they extend to metabelian (solvable of degree two) extensions. I will assume no special knowledge in algebra.
