## In Memoriam: John Forbes Nash, June 13, 1928 – May 23, 2015

John Forbes Nash and his wife Alicia de Lardé Nash died on May 23rd in a tragic accident. The Yale Mathematics Department sends its condolences to their family, friends, and colleagues.

One of the greatest mathematicians of his generation, John Nash made extraordinary contributions to partial differential equations, geometry, game theory, and economics . In his 1950 Ph.D. dissertation he introduced the definition and properties of the Nash equilibrium. This achievement, which has far reaching consequences in game theory, was cited in his award of the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He was awarded the 2015 Abel Prize for his contributions to the theory of partial differential equations, and also received the 1978 INFORMS John von Neumann Theory Prize and the 2010 Double Helix Medal. John Nash was noted for his stunning insights and great technical strength.
