New Incoming Faculty

April 22, 2021

The Mathematics Department is pleased to announce that we will soon be joined by three new ladder faculty members, who will strengthen our program in Analysis, Algebra and Geometry. We are looking forward to welcoming them here in the Fall of 2021.

Charles Smart is an analyst studying partial differential equations and probability, with an interest in the interaction between smooth macroscopic behavior and discrete stochastic processes.  He wrote his PhD in 2010 at UC Berkeley under Lawrence Evans and Leo Harrington.  He has held positions at Courant, MIT, Cornell, and the University of Chicago.  He was awarded a Sloan Fellowship in 2014.

Junliang Shen is an algebraic geometer, interested in connections to topology, geometry, and mathematical physics.  He wrote his PhD in 2018 at ETH Zurich with Rahul Pandharipande, and since then has been a Moore Instructor at MIT. He was awarded the SwissMAP Innovator Prize in 2018.

Lu Wang is a geometric analyst studying evolution equations, with an interest in singularity formation and self-similar solutions.  She wrote her PhD in 2011 at MIT under Tobias Colding.  She has held positions at MSRI, Johns Hopkins, Imperial College, University of Wisconsin, and Caltech. She was awarded a Sloan Fellowship in 2016.
