Question 12 of Thurston’s 1982 Bulletin article begins “Describe
the quasi-isometry type of an arbitrary Kleinian group”. In
other words, given a topological or combinatorial description of
a hyperbolic 3-manifold, give a recipe for estimating its
geometry. The picture is now closer to being complete than it
was in the ’80s, but significant gaps remain. I will survey some
aspects of this picture and some of the interesting connections
it leads us to.
