String scattering amplitudes and automorphic forms

String theory is a rich source of automorphic forms for SL(2) and higher rank groups. I will review how these structures are visible in the scattering of string states and what role the Fourier expansions of the automorphic forms play for predicting physical phenomena. Particular emphasis will be put on so-called small representations of the higher rank groups, including Kac-Moody groups.
