The general definition of an automorphic
L-function and its meromorphic continuation (when
known)is due to Langlands.Thanks to the works of
Piatetski-Shapiro and his collaborators,
the finer analytic properties of many of these functions are
known today.We explain how the last is crucial to some striking recent results in arithmetic equidistribution.
