Event description:
In Thurston’s proof of Geometrization for
Haken manifolds, the existence of a hyperbolic structure is reduced to
a fixed point problem on Teichmueller space. The key to solving this
problem is his Bounded Image Theorem, that says that the skinning map
(a map from Teichmueller space to itself associated to a 3-manifold)
has bounded image. I’ll discuss upper and lower bounds on the diameter
of this map.
