Event description:

In 1969 Tutte discovered several remarkable properties of the
chromatic polynomial related to the golden ratio. I will explain that
these results naturally fit in the framework of quantum topology. In
particular, I will introduce the notion of the chromatic algebra and
relate it to the Temperley-Lieb algebra. It turns out that Tutte’s golden
identity corresponds to a Jones-Wenzl projector, which plays a
crucial role in the construction of (2+1) dimensional topological
quantum field theories.
