I will discuss a recent proof with Bader, Miller and Stover that any non-arithmetic, finite volume
real or complex hyperbolic manifold has only finitely many totally geodesic submanifolds. I will place
some emphasis on the superrigidity theorem at the heart of our proofs and on the proof of this result,
particularly in the more recent complex hyperbolic case.
